Linear EP - Be Careful/NMBUS (Review)

What are we  t a l k i n g  a b o u t ?

Linear EP by Be Careful and NMBUS is a warm, comforting, nostalgic journey filled with wandering vocalese, glistening leads, strong exuberant kicks and feathery string pads.

The two artists have been dedicated collaborators for a few years. Linear was written in the studio, on the spot...over the course of a single day. The two producers got vaccinated, got together and locked themselves in the studio with one objective, "finish an entire project."

What the two created is a gapless playback recording with hybrid qualities in both the vaporwave and house genres. It makes you want to put on some ear buds and go running. It makes you want to get in your car and go on a road trip. It makes you want to turn off the lights and dance in the dark. It moves around in a fantastic way and covers a lot of ground for an EP.

We start off with the elusive, vibrant tune, Luxury. We are introduced to some light rain reverberating on the pavement. These raindrops will be a welcomed companion for the majority of the EP. As the drums kick in, we're thrown into a world...a world of luxurious possessions and experiences. We're driving down the highway in a sports car, bumping music on the radio.

As it closes out, we are reintroduced to that rain. It sounds like it's coming down even harder now. We transition into the song, Impact. An electric piano comes in with some very ominous, ethereal sounding jazz voicings. We are again introduced to some faint vocalese as the vibe builds and builds with percs, kick drum, pads and so much more.

As we transition to the next song, Nectar we are greeted with a very vibrato-heavy pad with tons of brightness and energy. We are later introduced to a mysterious dark synth bass that throws down some grounding for the listener as we start to wander even further around various genres.

Elapse is definitely my favorite track on the album. If you're into meditation, even just a quick breathing exercise, throw on this song, it's strangely hypnotic and super groovy. It gives off incredibly positive vibes.

As we approach the end of the EP, we then hear the tune, Allure. The pace slows down significantly as percussion is temporarily stripped from the mix. As strong trap hats approach from the distance, we begin to feel the sense of width within the space. Echoes bounce through space off dated, dusty 90's synths and drum machines. One wandering pentatonic melody rings out throughout the entirety of this song and I couldn't be more pleased with that. It's fantastic and quite mesmerizing.

The final track is titled Raizen. It definitely has some strong hip-hop and trap roots. The hi-hats don't lie, everyone. This last track also has a massive kick. It hits hard.

As Raizen starts to come to a close, I wonder, "has it stopped raining?" And sure enough, there's no more rain. The sun came out.

Linear EP by Be Careful and NMBUS is a bite-sized, vaporized tour de force. It is definitely worth a purchase and a listen or five.
